321ACTION: Your action is needed now to get VAWA passed
Your civic action to-do list for January 17, 2022
Violence Against Women Act, Voting Rights, Protecting Reproductive Choice
Register early for the Women to Watch Leadership Weekend happening March 20 & 21, 2022. See below and follow us on social media for more details.
The COVID-19 pandemic has raged on and exacerbated domestic and sexual violence. Meanwhile, the Violence Against Women Act, which will provide crucial support and protections for survivors of these crimes, has languished in the Senate.
On January 19th at 12 p.m. ET, join JWI in joining the National Task Force to End Sexual and Domestic Violence, Angelina Jolie, and Senate sponsors of the upcoming Violence Against Women Act (VAWA) reauthorization for a policy hour of action to ask Senators to co-sponsor and pass this bipartisan consensus bill. This event will be live-streamed at facebook.com/NTFSDV/.
The Voting Rights Act of 1965 was passed in large part due to Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s (MLK’s) visionary and valiant efforts to achieve equal participation in the election process for all Americans. Today, this act has been undermined, and millions of people, particularly BIPOC, are being denied access to the ballot box.
This MLK Day, we must carry on his legacy by fighting for people’s ability to exercise their right to vote. Email your senators and tell them to end the filibuster and pass the Freedom to Vote Act and John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act. Use the National Council of Jewish Women’s (NCJW) toolkit, to make your voice heard and amplify activists’ efforts on social media.
January 22nd is the anniversary of Roe vs. Wade which enshrined the right to reproductive choice in the Constitution. However, this right is under imminent threat through Supreme Court rulings, and federal and state laws poised to effectively ban abortion.
In honor of the 49th anniversary of our right to choose, this week and next, JWI will be sharing actions you can take to fight for the bodily autonomy of women globally. On January 20th at 4 p.m. ET, attend “Growing Up with Roe, Going Beyond It” by Unite for Reproductive & Gender Equity (URGE).
