Your civic action to-do list for January 24, 2022

Antisemitism, Reproductive Justice, Gender Equality

Register early for the Women to Watch Leadership Weekend happening March 20 & 21, 2022. See below and follow us on social media for more details.

The atrocious attack on Congregation Beth Israel in Colleyville, TX was yet another violent demonstration of hate and antisemitism. This is in the context of a horrifying increase in hate crimes against Jewish people; American Jews make up less than 2% of the population but experience almost 60% of reported religious bias crimes

The Biden Administration’s appointment of a U.S. Special Envoy to Monitor and Combat Anti-Semitism is a first step. However, the Senate has blocked the confirmation of Professor Deborah Lipstadt to this position. Contact your senators now and tell them to confirm Professor Lipstadt’s appointment. Read JWI CEO Meredith Jacob's op-ed in Washington Jewish Week (WJW) about the attack on Beth Israel and the rise in antisemitism.

Abortion rights are in peril, and this week is significant in the movement for reproductive justice. January 22nd was the 49th anniversary of Roe v. Wade, and January 28th is the one-year anniversary of the Biden Administration’s executive repeal of the global gag rule.

We need to ensure that this Roe anniversary isn’t the last and do everything we can to protect people’s access to this essential health care globally. Join the movement to defend reproductive choice by:

  • Attending one of the Repro Shabbats organized by the National Council of Jewish Women (NCJW);

  • Emailing your senators and telling them to pass the Women’s Health Protection Act (WHPA) which will protect abortion rights nationwide by prohibiting medically unnecessary restrictions and bans; and

  • Writing to your members of Congress and encouraging them to pass the Global Health, Empowerment and Rights (Global HER) Act, which will permanently repeal the global gag rule.

Protections against discrimination based on gender/sex are still not enshrined in the U.S. Constitution. The Equal Rights Amendment (ERA) would institutionalize these protections. However, Congress needs to remove the barriers preventing its passage.

Join JWI and the ERA Coalition for a rally, in-person or online, on January 27th - the anniversary of Virgina’s ratification of this important Constitutional amendment.

Rally Schedule

  • 12:00-1:30 p.m. ET – Rally at the White House (also live-streamed)

  • 1:30-2:30 p.m. ET – March to the Department of Justice (DOJ)

  • 2:30 p.m. ET – Deliver petitions to DOJ (sign the petition!)

Curated resources:

  • Student Loan Debt Campaign (United State of Women) - Women, particularly Black women, disproportionately carry the burden of student loan debt. Visit this webpage to learn more about this issue and how you can take action.
