3. Almost every state legislature is in session right now!
In a nutshell: As gridlock begins to take over Washington and the 2020 presidential election gears up, state legislatures around the country are passing laws on voting rights, gun violence, intimate partner violence, environmental protections, reproductive choice, and many other issues that directly impact you.
Take Action: Pay attention to what is happening in your state capitol right now. Your voice can have an enormous impact!
2. Real change can happen when voters flip the majority leadership in state legislatures.
In a nutshell: This year the Virginia legislature is on track to pass the Equal Rights Amendment, universal background checks, and laws that will increase access to abortion and reproductive healthcare.
Take Action: Don’t be dismayed if you live a conservative state; your vote matters. Make sure you register to vote, and hold all of your elected leaders accountable in November!
1. Maryland has long been seen as a liberal bastion, but there is room for progress..
In a nutshell: This session, our partners are pushing for legislation that would make strangulation a felony (it is currently a misdemeanor) and change the law to allow a person to prosecute their spouse for rape or sexual assault.
Take Action: If you live in Maryland, contact your state legislators and tell them to support these proposals. In other states, seek out similar laws to support!
