The Equal Rights Amendment & Protecting pregnant workers and religious freedom without discrimination: Your civic action to-do list for 1-20-20

3. With Virginia's passage of the Equal Rights Amendment (ERA), we have the 38 states needed for it to be added to the Constitution -- finally guaranteeing that men and women are treated equally under the law.

In a nutshell: Unfortunately, the deadline for ratification has passed. In order for the ERA to be added to the Constitution, Congress must be extend the deadline.

Take Action: In 1972, JWI stepped up as the first Jewish organization to support the ERA. Join us in pushing for a Resolution in the House and Senate that removes the deadline!

2. Too many pregnant workers are being pushed out of jobs for asking for reasonable accommodations, like a water bottle at their work station, more frequent bathroom breaks, or a stool to sit on at the cash register.

In a nutshell: The Pregnant Workers Fairness Act,a bill that would strengthen protections against pregnancy discrimination, passed out of committee last week with bipartisan support!

Take Action: This week, while your Representative is in district, tell them to join the U.S. Chamber of Commerce in support of this bill!

1. JWI firmly believes in religious freedom; however, we reject the use of religion as a rationale for discrimination.

In a nutshell: The administration has been relentlessly expanding the ability of religious entities and religious people to discriminate, putting the lives of women and LGBTQ folks at risk.

Take Action: JWI was an original sponsor of a bill that eliminates the newly created Conscience and Religious Freedom Department in the Office of Civil Rights at the Department of Health and Human Services. Call your Representative and urge to sponsor this legislation – to protect patients and stop wasting taxpayer dollars.
