Protecting pregnant workers, stalking victims, and sexual assault survivors: Your civic action to-do list for 1-13-20

3. Women are (still) being fired for being pregnant.

In a nutshell: This week the Education and Labor Committee in the House of Representatives will discuss the bipartisan Pregnancy Workers’ Fairness Act (PWFA), a bill that would end pregnancy discrimination, promote healthy pregnancies, and protect economic security for women and their families.

Take Action: Text PWFA to 747464 to urge your Representative to co-sponsor and advance this bill!

2. Take action during National Stalking Awareness Month.

In a nutshell: Every year more than 5 million women and nearly 2.5 million men are victims of stalking, yet victims are not protected nearly enough. Often an indicator of (and even a precursor to) other violent crimes, stalking is not adequately addressed by many state and federal laws.

Take Action: Email your Senators and tell them to support the Violence Against Women Reauthorization Act (S. 2843), which closes the boyfriend and stalking loophole that currently allows convicted stalkers and abusers to buy and possess guns.

1. Harvey Weinstein is finally on trial - but only a few of his 80+ accusers will have their day in court.

In a nutshell: Twenty percent of all women will be sexually assaulted at some point in their lives, but statutes of limitations pose barriers to justice for many victims. Survivors should not be penalized because they were too traumatized, or felt too threatened, to come forward soon after they were attacked.

Take Action: Tell your state elected officials to support legislation to eliminate the statute of limitations on felony sex crimes!
