321ACTION: MLK Day & the Anniversary of Colleyville and Roe

Ready to make a difference?

Here are three ways to get started:

  1. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day

Today commemorates the civil rights legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., but we must not only reflect on his legacy – we must take action to help realize his vision of a world where justice and liberty thrive and true equity is realized.

Take time today to find an action you can take on Repair the World’s Service for Racial Justice Campaign site to support under resourced and marginalized communities.

2. Anniversary of Colleyville, TX hostage crisis

Yesterday marked the first anniversary of the attack on Congregation Beth Israel in Colleyville, TX.

The rise in hate and anti-Semitism is alarming and dangerous, especially given the rise of gun sales. Firearms are used to harm and kill, but guns are also used as a tools to threaten and control (as in the Colleyville hostage crisis).

We can take action to protect ourselves by making sure our houses of worship and Jewish spaces have a security plan, but we must also advocate for common sense gun violence prevention policies that would prevent those wishing to do harm from being able to purchase these deadly weapons.

3. The non-anniversary of Roe v. Wade

Sunday will mark what would have been the 50th anniversary of Roe v. Wade.

Since the Supreme Court struck down Roe, 17 states have moved to ban or restrict abortion access, leaving millions of pregnant people without access to vital healthcare.

Let’s use this anniversary to say loudly and proudly that government should stay out of our healthcare decisions and that access to abortion is integral to health, safety, and equity. On Friday join the Jewish Abortion Access Coalition on social media using hashtags #JewsForAbortionAccess and #BansOffOurBodies, and on Sunday Jan. 22 join the Women’s March rallies across the country to say abortion access is “Bigger Than Roe.”
