VAWA divided; unfettered gun violence; and 16 days of activism starts now: Your civic action to-do list for 11-25-19
3. For years JWI has been working in a bipartisan manner to pass a VAWA that meets the needs of survivors. Unfortunately there are now two bills in the Senate: S. 2843, the “advocates bill," which is a companion to the bipartisan House passed bill, and another bill.
In a nutshell: S. 2843, introduced by Senator Feinstein, includes the modest enhancements requested by the field. Senator Ernst’s bill (S. 2920) undermines hard-won protections around gender identity and sexual orientation, rolls back tribal sovereignty, and fails to close the “boyfriend” and “stalking” loopholes that allow abusers to access firearms.
Take Action: Read JWI’s statement on VAWA and email your Senators to urge them to support S. 2843!
2. Yesterday there were eighteen fatal shootings across our country, but not one of them made national headlines.
In a nutshell: Gun violence has become the new norm, and the Senate’s refusal to enact legislation that will save lives is disgraceful.
Take Action: Members of Congress are home this week. Go to a town hall meeting and share your deep concerns about their lack of action to reduce gun violence.
1. Gender-based violence is a human rights violation. Around the world, one in three women experiences abuse during her lifetime.
In a nutshell: Today is the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women, kicking off 16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence.
Take Action: Join JWI and people around the world for the #16days campaign on social media. Follow @JewishWomenIntl and share our #16days post every day!
