Here's what JWI is doing to support our community through the COVID-19 crisis:
Educating advocates with two free webinars: Abuse in Later Life on Thursday, May 21 and Intersection of Runaway and Homeless Youth and Intimate Partner Violence on Wednesday, May 27.
Holding a webinar next week with renowned scholars to discuss the everyday struggle to get an abortion in America.
Launching a brand new series on women's reproductive and sexual health and wellness, "Invest in your Health."
Hosted the final section of our three-part series, “Recalibrating Your Finances During COVID 19”, helping our Young Women’s Leadership Network community navigate unexpected changes.
...and here's what you can do this week to keep the momentum going:
3. Access to reproductive health care has been attacked for decades, and the pandemic has only made matters worse.
In a nutshell: Many governors have tried to deny access to abortion during the pandemic by deeming the procedure “non-essential. While most of the orders have been overturned by the courts many barriers still remain.
Take action: Register for our May 26th webinar, where leading scholars David S. Cohen and Carole Joffe will discuss their new book, Obstacle Course: The Everyday Struggle to Get an Abortion in America.
2. The House passed the HEROES Act on Friday, and while it will provide relief to many, much more needs to be done. It is now up to the Senate to provide additional help to the millions of Americans who desperately need it.
In a nutshell: While the HEROES Act doesn’t go far enough in supporting domestic violence and sexual assault programs (especially those serving underserved communities), it does expand access to paid sick leave and paid time off, ensures all immigrants have access to testing and stimulus direct payments, and invests in victim services as well as survivors.
Take action: Tell your Senators that more needs to be done to protect the safety and security of women in this country who are being most impacted by this pandemic.
1. The prevalence and underreporting of campus sexual violence is staggering, and yet the Trump Administration introduced a rule that will roll back important protections and make it even more difficult for survivors to come forward and seek justice.
In a nutshell: The Department of Education is failing people who experience harassment, assault, and violence in schools, but the Gender Equity in Education Act will provide schools with resources to help them fully realize Title IX’s promise of equity.
Take action: Urge your members of Congress to co-sponsor this important bill!
