We are all trying to figure out how to live in this new reality. At JWI, our hope is that by providing you information on what is happening in Congress and on the issues we advocate on behalf of every day, you will not only be better informed, but will be inspired and able to take action on behalf of yourself, your community, and the country. We thank you for everything you are doing. Please let us know how we can be most helpful and supportive during this difficult time. Stay safe.
3. Congress is trying to come together to develop a third coronavirus package to support the U.S. economy, however Senate leadership’s current proposal falls short.
In a nutshell: Negotiations are still ongoing, but it is important that any package includes provisions that protect domestic violence and sexual assault survivors who are in particular jeopardy, adds accountability measures for the large corporations that receive recovery funds, and allows Planned Parenthood clinics, other healthcare providers, and nursing homes the ability to apply for small business loans.
Take action: Call your Senators and tell them that these provisions must be included in a compromise package!
2. There are many important issues that are being left out of the 24 hour COVID-19 news cycle.
In a nutshell: Gun purchases have skyrocketed, abortion clinics in some states are being told to stop all abortions unless the mother’s health is at risk, and a rollback to sexual harassment policies in all schools and universities may go into effect soon.
Take action: Keep reading JWI’s weekly 3-2-1-Action alerts to keep up with what is happening on the issues you care about!
1. Many people are coming together and doing what they can to help each other in this time of crisis, but others are profiting off of this global pandemic.
In a nutshell: A number of senators and representatives who received briefings early in the year bought and sold stocks to take advantage of the economic impact of the virus, making hundreds of thousands and even millions of dollars while every day Americans are losing their jobs, businesses, and livelihoods.
Take action: Call Senators Lankford (R-OK) and Coons (D-DE) and Representatives Deutch (D-FL) and Marchant (R-TX), the members of congress who run the Ethics Committees, and tell them to open an investigation.
