LET'S GET TO WORK: Civic action to-do list for 4-24-17
3. Fully fund programs that protect the vulnerable
President Trump’s budget proposal includes major cuts to key departments and agencies that women and families rely on. Whether you’re concerned about health care, feeding hungry children, or ending violence against women, call your representatives and tell them to make certain we don’t cut federal programs that help our nation’s most vulnerable. They have until Friday to agree on a plan and avoid a government shutdown.
2. Unsafe communities can’t be healthy
Surgeon General Vivek H. Murthy was fired on Friday. A strong advocate for safe communities, Murthy repeatedly called gun violence a public health threat. As President Trump heads to Atlanta for the National Rifle Association’s annual convention this Friday, let’s urge Acting Surgeon General Rear Admiral Sylvia Trent-Adams to amplify her predecessor’s message.
1. Stand up to sexual harassment
Fox News fired Bill O’Reilly last week, following numerous sexual harassment allegations against the television host. His ouster highlights the power of standing up and speaking out against rape culture. Study AAUW’s guide on workplace sexual harassment and know how to respond if it happens to you.
And for you...
On Earth Day, Saturday’s March for Science drew crowds in cities all over the world. Today we continue the celebration of science by honoring astronaut Peggy Whitson, who this morning broke NASA’s record for most time spent in space. And for some additional inspiration, you can attend the Climate March in D.C. this Saturday; watch the movie "Hidden Figures"; or read This Changes Everything: Capitalism vs. The Climate by Naomi Klein.
