LET'S GET TO WORK: Civic action to-do list for 4-17-17
3. Ask Your State to #StandWithPP
Last Thursday, behind closed doors and without debate, President Trump quietly signed legislation that allows states to withhold Title X funds from family planning programs. Millions of low-income patients depend on providers like Planned Parenthood for birth control and other health care protections. Ask your state to follow Maryland’s lead and continue providing this crucial funding.
2. Educate DeVos
U.S. Secretary of Education Betsy DeVos met with Rep. Earl Ehrhart (R-GA), who proposed a law that, if enacted, will take away campus rape survivors’ rights. Ehrhart says he’s concerned about the rights of the accused, a refrain we’ve heard from DeVos herself. DeVos still hasn’t met with student survivors of sexual assault, but these are stories she needs to hear. Share your experience and educate DeVos on why students need Title IX!
1. End Gun Violence
Sunday marked the 10th anniversary of the Virginia Tech massacre. Legislation that followed this horrific event proved that our nation’s leaders can respond to tragedy by making our communities safer, but lately Congress is working to dismantle laws that keep us safe. The House recently passed the Veterans 2nd Amendment Protection Act, which would make it easier for individuals deemed mentally incapacitated or incompetent to buy guns. Call your senators and tell them to keep life-saving protections in place!
