JWI condemns the Senate's vote to confirm Amy Coney Barrett to the Supreme Court

Tonight's vote to confirm Amy Coney Barrett to the Supreme Court irrevocably imperils women’s health and rights as well as the future of equal justice under the law. Jewish Women International strongly opposes the Senate majority’s vote and abuse of power in forcing Barrett's confirmation in the middle of an election.

The confirmation proceedings only served to exacerbate our concerns around Barrett’s extremist judicial philosophy. She refused to affirm fundamental civil rights and democratic norms like the peaceful transfer of power. Her testimony proved just how dire a threat her justiceship is to reproductive freedom, health care access, voting rights, survivors of sexual assault, racial justice, and LGBTQ rights.

Barrett’s installation will severely undermine our work at JWI to build a world in which all women and girls thrive. There is nothing feminist about criminalizing bodily autonomy or cutting off vulnerable Americans from health care. Elevating Barrett to the highest court in our nation cements a conservative supermajority that will perpetuate systems of oppression, discrimination, and inequity for decades to come.

With one week until Election Day, we urge you to vote for politicians and lower court judges who will safeguard and advance justice. And then... lobby your legislators on behalf of the policies you want to see.
