We are all trying to figure out how to live in this new reality. At JWI, our hope is that by providing you information on what is happening in Congress and on the issues we advocate on behalf of every day, you will not only be better informed, but will be inspired and able to take action on behalf of yourself, your community, and the country. We thank you for everything you are doing. Please let us know how we can be most helpful and supportive during this difficult time. Stay safe.

3. Despite “stay-at-home” orders all across our country, shootings continue to terrorize communities.

In a nutshell: Gun sales skyrocketing puts all of us at greater risk, especially domestic violence victims and children living in homes without proper gun storage solutions.

Take action: Join a twitter chat today from 3-4 pm ET using the hashtag, #PublicHealth4GVP, to discuss this public health crisis!

2. Saturday marked one year since the reauthorization of the Violence Against Women Act (VAWA) passed the House of Representatives with bipartisan support, and yet the majority of the Senate has been unwilling to support the important improvements in the bill.

In a nutshell: Since an improved VAWA hasn’t passed the Senate, programs and survivors are in even greater need of emergency funding and assistance.

Take action: Call your senators and tell them that a fourth COVID stimulus package must address survivors’ needs.

1. Rape crisis centers are struggling to support survivors during this crisis.

In a nutshell: The third COVID relief package failed to support sexual assault survivors and children exposed to domestic violence.

Take action: For Sexual Assault Awareness Month, use social media to tell your elected officials that the federal Sexual Assault Services Program (SASP) needs at least $100 million to help rape crisis centers respond to the needs of survivors! Use the hashtags #SAAM, #CongressDoBetter, and #COVID19.
