Here's what JWI did in the past week to support our community through the COVID-19 crisis:
Kicked off a three-part series on "Recalibrating Your Finances," helping our Young Women's Leadership Network community navigate unexpected changes wrought by COVID-19.
JWI CEO Meredith Jacobs joined NCJW and Jewish Council for Public Affairs in leading a panel discussion on how women are being impacted during the pandemic.
JWI Senior Manager of Prevention Programs Ariella Neckritz led "Defining Boundaries & Communicating Consent During Covid-19," a virtual workshop with Towson University Hillel on healthy consent and boundaries look like when connecting over social media, dating apps and other online formats.
Hosted a virtual event with JWI's advocacy and programming staff discussing domestic violence in the time of coronavirus, and the impact of JWI's Flower Project on women in shelters across the U.S.
...and here's what you can do this week to keep the momentum going:
3. Despite D.C.’s stay-home-order, Senators are returning to Capitol Hill today.
In a nutshell: Legislators can no longer ignore the uptick of violence against women during COVID. Phase four of the financial recovery must fund domestic violence shelters, rape crisis centers, and the economic needs of survivors.
Take action: Click here to directly email your Senators and tell them to fund the needs of survivors and the organizations who provide critical on-the-ground support!
2. Two weeks after Canada’s most deadly mass shootings, the Prime Minister banned assault weapons. By contrast, no action has been taken by the U.S. government in the two and a half years since America’s most deadly shooting in which 59 people were killed and 526 were injured in Las Vegas.
In a nutshell: Since 2009 there have been at least 26 mass shootings that involved an assault weapon, accounting for 302 deaths and 653 injuries. The time to reinstate the assault weapons ban in this country has long since past.
Take action: Email your members of Congress and tell them that banning assault weapons will save lives.
1. Access to birth control and reproductive healthcare is inextricably linked to equity and economic security.
In a nutshell: On Wednesday, the Supreme Court will hear a case to determine whether certain employers can refuse to cover birth control under the guise of religious or moral objections.
Take action: Join advocates from across the country for a digital rally tomorrow from 3:00-4:30 pm ET or livestream the event here to declare #HandsOffMyBC!
