A year since Pittsburgh, waiting on VAWA, and the EMPOWER Act: Your civic action to-do list for 10-28-19
3. Yesterday more than 20,000 people around the world paused in solidarity with Pittsburgh to remember the 11 lives lost at the Tree of Life synagogue. Over the past year we have seen hundreds more mass shootings, many of them fueled by hate and anti-Semitism, but not a single gun control bill has been voted on in the Senate.
In a nutshell: Almost two months ago Senator McConnell said that mass shootings “deserve a response,” but he has done nothing.
Take Action: Email your Senators and tell them to support gun violence prevention legislation – Assault Weapons Ban of 2019 (S 66), Background Check Expansion Act (S 42), and Extreme Risk Protections Order Act of 2019 (S 506).
2. This Domestic Violence Awareness Month, thousands of women and men stood in solidarity with victims of abuse. People from across the country joined campaigns to show how their #FaithSupportsSurvivors and to call on the Senate to take up the Violence Against Women Reauthorization Act of 2019 (HR 1585).
In a nutshell: VAWA passed the House in April, but a companion bill still hasn’t been introduced in the Senate. Survivors need the critical improvements in HR 1585 now.
Take Action: As we enter the final week of DVAM, continue our efforts to pass HR 1585 by signing your organization on to a letter asking the Senate to pass the bill!
1. It has been two years since the #MeToo movement galvanized women and men to share their stories of sexual assault and harassment in the workplace. As more brave people come forward, perpetrators who have been shielded for too long are finally being held accountable.
In a nutshell: This weekend the Philadelphia Police Chief Inspector was arrested and charged with sexually assaulting three female officers between 2004 and 2007.
Take Action: The EMPOWER Act is the only comprehensive policy to eradicate the culture of silence and fear in the workplace. Email your members of Congress and tell them to co-sponsor HR 1521/S 574.
