321ACTION: Take Action to End Gun Violence

Your civic action to-do list for May 30, 2022

There have already been 212 mass shootings in the 150 days of 2022. In the face of this number of horrific and senseless tragedies, it is understandable that many of us may be feeling overwhelmed and hopeless. We are devastated by the grief and pain too many are suffering from across America right now. For over 30 years, JWI has been advocating for gun violence prevention and demanding legislators pass common-sense gun laws that will save lives – and we will continue to fight to keep our communities and children safe. We hope the content in this week's 321 can empower you to take meaningful actions to help curb the epidemic of gun violence.

We stand with those in Ulvade mourning the lives tragically cut short and pray for healing and strength. May the memories of the victims lost at Robb Elementary School.

Support Commonsense Background Checks

The shooters in Buffalo, NY and Ulvade, TX were both able to legally obtain firearms under the current gun laws. It is unacceptable that existing background checks do not do more to prevent individuals who are a danger to others from purchasing weapons.

The Bipartisan Background Checks Act of 2019 and The Enhanced Background Checks Act of 2019 will expand background checks and save lives. Call on your senators to pass these commonsense pieces of legislation now.

Take Part in #WearOrange Weekend

Friday, June 3rd to Sunday, June 5th is “Wear Orange” weekend which was created in honor of Hadiya Pendleton, a 15-year-old high school student from Chicago who was tragically shot and killed in 2013 while standing with friends at a playground after taking her final exams. Hadiya's friends commemorated her life by wearing orange, the color hunters wear in the woods to protect themselves and others. Wear Orange Day is now observed nationally to honor the countless victims and survivors of gun violence and demand change.

This Friday, on National Gun Violence Awareness Day, wear orange and post on social media with the #wearorange to raise awareness about the scourge of gun violence impacting our communities and children. Find more ways to participate at https://wearorange.org/.
