321ACTION: Protect our safety, bodily autonomy, and workplaces!
Your civic action to-do list for July 18, 2022.
Protect Essential Healthcare
Abortion care access—everywhere—is vital to social & economic equality, reproductive autonomy, and the right to determine our own lives. But the Supreme Court’s decision in Dobbs will deny people all over the country the essential health care they need.
On Friday, the House of Representatives passed the Women’s Health Protection Act (WHPA) as well as the Ensuring Access to Abortion Act – pieces of legislation that would protect the right to access abortion and affirm the right to travel for abortion care.
Also, Rep. Kathy Manning introduced the Right to Contraception Act, new legislation to codify birth control rights into federal law.
Ban Assault Weapons
Mass shootings that involve an assault weapon are far deadlier than other shootings, accounting for 25% of all mass shootings and over 75% of injuries. These weapons of war don’t belong in our streets.
On Wednesday both Houses of Congress will hold hearings on assault weapons. Watch to learn more – House Judiciary will markup the Assault Weapons Ban bill, Senate Judiciary will hold a hearing on assault weapons, and the House Oversight Committee will hold a hearing on assault weapons with three CEO’s of gun manufacturers as witnesses.
Support Workplace Protections
Non-disclosure agreements (NDAs) in instances of sexual harassment and assault contribute to a culture of silence and allow perpetrators to continue their abuse. No survivor should be barred from coming forward to report workplace violence.
Reps. Lois Frankel (D-FL) and Ken Buck (R-CO) and Sen. Kristen Gillibrand (D-NY) have joined advocates and their colleagues from both sides of the aisle to call for the passage of the Speak Out Act – legislation that would enable workers to report workplace sexual assault and harassment even if they signed an NDA.
