Support survivors, racial justice, and pay equity: Your civic action to-do list for 4-12-21

3. Record numbers of women and children are living in domestic violence shelters after escaping escalating violence under quarantine with their abusers.

In a nutshell: Biden's first budget request to Congress last week proposed doubling spending for the Department of Justice's Violence Against Women Act programs to $1 billion. These investments can help survivors of gender-based violence access support, justice, and economic security.

Take action: You can help JWI empower survivors NOW by donating to the Flower Project, which provides women in shelters across the country with financial literacy resources and flowers for Mother's Day.

2. Black lives matter. Daunte Wright should still be alive today. Systemic racism and police violence are deadly.

In a nutshell: Discrimination and misconduct in law enforcement have fatal consequences for Black and brown communities. We must hold police accountable for continued racist brutality, and the House of Representatives' Justice in Policing Act is a strong start.

Take action: Urge your senators to support the Justice in Policing Act!

1. Lawmakers must stand up for working women. Wage discrimination deprives women of fair pay in every state, no matter their industry or level of education. And it hits women of color the hardest.

In a nutshell: The Paycheck Fairness Act will help to close the gender wage gap by eliminating loopholes in the Equal Pay Act, disrupting patterns of pay discrimination, and strengthening workplace protections for women.

Take action: Equal pay for equal work comes to a vote this week in the House of Representatives. Tell your representative to vote in support of the Paycheck Fairness Act!
