Police accountability, abortion rights, and gun violence prevention: Your civic action to-do list for 5-24-21
3. Tomorrow marks one year since George Floyd's death, and his memory has been a catalyst for meaningful change. Passing the George Floyd Justice in Policing Act of 2021 will help save lives and mitigate systemic police violence.
In a nutshell: The Justice in Policing Act holds law enforcement accountable for longstanding discrimination and brutality, prohibits chokeholds and no-knock warrants, ends qualified immunity, and makes other key structural reforms. The House passed this legislation in March, and it's time for the Senate to do the same.
Take action: Tell your senators to support the Justice in Policing Act!
2. The Supreme Court announced that it will review Mississippi's 15-week abortion ban and hear Dobbs v. Jackson Women's Health Organization, posing a direct challenge to reproductive rights guaranteed under Roe v. Wade.
In a nutshell: Mississippi's ban violates nearly 50 years of Supreme Court precedent. If the Court upholds the ban, it will gut Roe and decimate abortion rights nationwide. Almost half of states could immediately prohibit abortion outright if Roe were overturned.
Take action: With a 6-3 conservative supermajority on the bench, reproductive freedom is undeniably in jeopardy. Call on your Members of Congress to pass federal protections for abortion rights and access!
1. There were 12 mass shootings across the country — in Illinois, New Jersey, Ohio, Indiana, South Carolina, Virginia, Texas and Minnesota — just this past weekend.
In a nutshell: It's time for the Senate to step up and pass comprehensive reforms to protect our communities from gun violence.
