We are all trying to figure out how to live in this new reality. At JWI, our hope is that by providing you information on what is happening in Congress and on the issues we advocate on behalf of every day, you will not only be better informed, but will be inspired and able to take action on behalf of yourself, your community, and the country. We thank you for everything you are doing. Please let us know how we can be most helpful and supportive during this difficult time. Stay safe.
3. As we continue to stay home for the sake of safety, we must remember that “home” isn’t a safe place for everyone. On any given day – including Mother’s Day – there are some 45,000 women and children who’ve escaped violent homes and are living in domestic violence shelters.
In a nutshell: For decades, JWI’s Flower Project has been sending bouquets of flowers to domestic violence shelters across the country, delivering a loving reminder that they are not forgotten on a holiday that wouldn’t otherwise feel special.
Take action: This year, as domestic violence escalates and economic uncertainty makes it ever more challenging for survivors to rebuild their lives, the Flower Project is more important than ever. Please support JWI by sending a card to show love to the people you care about most – and to those who need it most.
2. Survivors of domestic violence, sexual assault, dating violence, and stalking are disproportionately impacted by this crisis; Congress must act quickly to meet their needs!
In a nutshell: The phase four rescue package must contain the funding for domestic violence and sexual assault programs that was omitted the previous stimulus bills. Access to these programs is vital.
Take action: Call your members of congress and tell them to push for funding to domestic violence and sexual assault programs!
1. Despite the heroic efforts of healthcare workers, millions of Americans still do not have access to affordable care. Those without insurance face cost barriers that delay necessary care until their illness worsens – in this global pandemic that can slow detection and treatment of COVID-19, accelerating the spread of the virus. In a nutshell: The third COVID relief package failed to support sexual assault survivors and children exposed to domestic violence.
In a nutshell: Under the Affordable Care Act, those who buy their own insurance on the national and state health insurance exchanges must purchase a policy during a regular open enrollment period. However, reopening the exchanges NOW will help more Americans get insurance.
Take action: Sign this petition to demand the Department of Health and Human Services open special enrollment now!
