Domestic violence in the Jewish community, immigrant health care access, and hate crime response: Your civic action to-do list for 4-26-21
3. JWI is releasing the most comprehensive national study on domestic violence and the Jewish community ever undertaken.
In a nutshell: JWI will be hosting a research release panel tomorrow to discuss our findings – particularly around survivors' unmet needs – and explore JWI’s recommendations for new systems, collaborations, and funding priorities to better support Jewish survivors, and the service providers, programs, clergy, and advocates who serve them.
Take action: Register today for Raising Awareness and Understanding of Domestic Violence in the Jewish Community on April 27 at 12:00 p.m. ET.
2. Under current law, immigrants face a web of restrictions on health care coverage, often forcing them to pay out-of-pocket or to forgo care altogether. These discriminatory barriers to affordable care perpetuate health disparities in immigrant communities, limiting access to reproductive care and other essential services.
In a nutshell: Congress is reintroducing the Health Equity and Access under the Law (HEAL) for Immigrant Families Act, which will remove unnecessary barriers to health care access under Medicaid, the Children's Health Insurance Program, and the Affordable Care Act exchanges that immigrant families experience.
Take action: It just takes one click to tell your senators and representative to co-sponsor the HEAL for Immigrant Families Act!
1. The Senate just passed the combined COVID-19 Hate Crimes Act and Jabara-Heyer NO HATE Act by a vote of 94-1. These bills represent significant progress in addressing rising hate and violence targeting communities of color, religious minorities, immigrants, people with disabilities, and the LGBTQ community.
In a nutshell: The House of Representatives must now join the Senate in passing legislation to improve hate crimes reporting, provide grants for hate crime hotlines, and provide guidance for state and local law enforcement agencies to establish online hate crime reporting processes.
Take action: Tell your representative to support the COVID-19 Hate Crimes Act (H.R. 1843) and the Jabara-Heyer NO HATE Act of 2021 (H.R. 2383)!
