Critical elections tomorrow (VOTE!), the long wait for VAWA, and 61 shootings last weekend: Your civic action to-do list for 11-4-19
3. Tomorrow there are elections in more than half of U.S. states! State and local governments have enormous control; you can impact the balance of power in your state legislature by voting for people who support a woman’s right to choose, common-sense gun violence prevention policies, and paid family leave. Every vote counts!
In a nutshell: State and local governments have enormous control – the elections tomorrow matter. Your rights are risk.
Take Action: See what is on your ballot and find your polling location to make sure you are prepared!
2. Over 200 days ago the House passed the bipartisan Violence Against Women Reauthorization Act of 2019, but the Senate has yet to introduce a companion bill.
In a nutshell: The bipartisan VAWA (H.R. 1585) that passed the House has the full support of advocates across the country. It strengthens survivors’ access to housing, ensures that abusers cannot access guns, closes loopholes to allow Tribal courts to prosecute non-native perpetrators of sexual assault, and increases prevention funding.
Take Action: Join the YWCA’s Day of Action on Thursday, November 7th to call on your Senators to support H.R. 1585!
1. Over the weekend there were 61 shootings in 26 states, from Texas to Missouri to Maryland. These shootings left 67 people dead and 22 injured.
In a nutshell: There are so many shootings we don’t even hear about them anymore. This can’t be the new normal. Our federal government must do something.
Take Action: Email your senators and representative and urge them to support universal background checks, a ban on assault weapons, and closing loopholes that allow dating violence abusers access to firearms.
