Afghanistan, Build Back Better, and ERA: Your civic action to-do list for 8-23-21
3. Tens of thousands of Afghans are trapped and facing violent retaliation.
In a nutshell: We must evacuate the 20,000 Afghans who helped our government in addition to the human rights activists (including women and girls), journalists, and religious minorities who are in grave danger.
Take action: Call on the Biden administration to provide refuge to Afghans fleeing violence, message your members of Congress to urge them to expand Afghan resettlement programs, and attend HIAS’s webinar TODAY at 4 p.m. ET to learn more about the current state of affairs.
2. COVID-19 has shown us that historic investments in women and families are key to building a society in which women and girls have equal opportunity.
In a nutshell: This evening the House of Representatives will vote on a rule linking the bipartisan infrastructure bill passed in the Senate with the budget resolution that will includes priorities like expanded health care access, funding for child care, and paid leave programs.
Take action: Email your representative and tell them to support the entire budget package!
1. For decades JWI has been pushing to add the Equal Rights Amendment (ERA) to the Constitution, to finally guarantee that men and women are treated equally under the law.
In a nutshell: 38 states have ratified the ERA, but both chambers of Congress must act to remove the deadline for ratification. Earlier this year the House of Representatives passed legislation removing the ERA time limit, now the Senate must act.
Take action: Attend the rally on the front steps of the Supreme Court at noon ET on Thursday, August 26th or support the rally on social media with the hashtag #Rally4ERA.
JWI released the most comprehensive national study on domestic violence and the Jewish community ever undertaken. As the domestic violence field moves toward survivor-centered and community-based responses to violence, the Jewish community can choose to do the same. Check out our full report.
