321ACTION: LGBTQI persecution in Uganda; immigrant abuse survivors; elder abuse awareness
Ready to make a difference?
Here are three ways to get started:
1. Protest LGBTQI persecution in Uganda.
While many of us are celebrating Pride Month throughout June, in Uganda LGBTQI individuals are fleeing for their lives. Uganda’s President Museveni recently signed into law one of the world’s most extreme anti-LGBTQI+ bills. The new law makes same-sex relations a crime punishable by life in prison or even the death penalty. Call your senator now and ask them to stop any U.S. aid and support from going to Uganda until this horrific law is repealed.
2. Protect the health and safety of immigrant survivors by rejecting Congressional efforts to undo the 2022 Public Charge Rule.
All abuse survivors deserve access to safety: Fear of harming one's immigration status should never be a deterrent from seeking emergency shelter, safe housing, health care, food, or other basic needs. Call your Member of Congress and tell them to vote NO on the public charge rule. Click here for talking points - and tell President Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris that you expect the Administration to veto this legislation if it makes it to the President’s desk.
3. Check in on your elders.
Sadly, older people are not immune from abuse from caregivers, partners and adult children. With our aging populations, elder abuse is on the rise and the United Nations reports that rates of elder abuse are especially high in institutions such as nursing homes and long-term care facilities, with two out of three staff in nursing homes and long-term care facilities reporting that they have committed abuse in the past year. June 15th is World Elder Abuse Awareness Day. If you have older people in your lives – grandparents, parents, neighbors and friends – check in on them regularly and seek professional help if you suspect abuse.
