2021 priorities for gender equity: Your civic action to-do list for 12-14-20
In 2020, JWI’s advocacy work grew as we focused on racial justice and COVID-19 relief in our fight for the health, rights, and safety of all women and girls. As we look forward to 2021, we will continue our efforts to secure support and assistance for survivors of gender-based violence; ensure that our economy is working for everyone by advocating for continued COVID aid as well as paid family leave, equal pay, and guaranteed paid sick days; and guarantee access to and coverage of comprehensive reproductive care. Join us through our VOTE – AND initiative as we build a grassroots network of activists, leaders, and concerned citizens to advocate for policies that advance gender equity.
Our offices are closed for the final two weeks of December and we look forward to publishing 321 again come January. We appreciate your support of JWI and engagement in our critical advocacy work.
3. COVID-19 has thrown the lack of resources and culturally competent support for survivors of domestic violence and sexual assault into sharp relief.
In a nutshell: We need Congress to reauthorize and expand the Violence Against Women Act, protect funding for the Victims of Crime Act, and invest in support services in COVID relief in order to adequately address the incidence of interpersonal violence as well as the gravity and complexity of survivors’ needs.
Take action: Donate today to JWI to sustain our work to combat gender-based violence.
2. Wage discrimination, caregiving responsibilities, and workplace harassment have always hurt women’s participation in the workforce, but COVID-19 has pushed it to the brink of regression.
In a nutshell: As the line between work life and home life has blurred, the need for paid family and medical leave, pay equity, and policies that economically empower women is clearer than ever. JWI works extensively to train women on financial literacy, champion workplace advancement and equity for women, and partner with men to change the workforce culture.
Take action: Support JWI’s advocacy and programming to help all women and girls achieve economic security!
1. Attacks on reproductive rights from the Supreme Court and anti-abortion legislators have disproportionately harmed women of color, low-income women, and young women.
In a nutshell: We need the federal government to protect birth control coverage and put an end to abortion coverage bans, medically unnecessary abortion restrictions, and states' attempts to criminalize the procedure.
Take action: We need you to invest in JWI's efforts to safeguard and expand access to abortion and contraceptive care.
