On Monday, August 1st at 11:00 am ET, join other D.C.-area Jewish women at My Sister's Place for the chance to furnish, decorate, and beautify special spaces for teens and women living in the shelter to find respite and relaxation. The new women's space, called "Joanie's Place" in memory of the beloved Joan Margolius, and teen space, will be peaceful oases where survivors and their teen children can relax with moments of mindful meditation, access laptops to find employment opportunities and do schoolwork, and quietly read, heal and grow together.
Thank you to the Joan Margolius Cherner Mother’s Day Fund and the Slotkin Family for generously supporting this project.

*Learn More about Joanie's Place
Joanie's Place is brand-new concept for survivors living in domestic violence shelters. An expansion of JWI's National Library Initiative (NLI), these rooms will be a peaceful oasis where survivors can relax with moments of mindful meditation, access laptops to find employment opportunities, read financial literacy materials, and heal and grow together. The first Joanie's Place will debut in My Sister's Place.
See the beautiful Joanie's Place design for My Sister's Place here.
Thank you to Erika Jayne Chaudhuri and her team for donating the design of Joanie's Place.
This new Joanie's Place is generously supported by The Joan Margolius Cherner Mother’s Day Fund.
Learn More about the Teen Space
These new spaces help ease the traumatic upheaval faced by the teen residents of domestic violence shelters. Each teen space will have comfortable, colorful, and modern seating areas, age-appropriate books, and laptops and printers for schoolwork. The spaces will provide moments of calm, inspire learning and education, and provide comfort during tumultuous moments of transition for survivors' teen children.
The first Teen Space will debut in My Sister's Place with the generous support of the Slotkin Family.
If you are interested in bringing a children's library, teen space, or new "Joanie's Place" to a domestic violence shelter – please email Rachel Perten.
