Advocacy Alert: JWI Applauds President Biden for the Executive Order Implementing Bipartisan Military Justice Reforms

July 28, 2023

JWI applauds President Biden on the signing of the Executive Order Implementing Bipartisan Military Justice Reforms. The EO puts into place the reforms passed by Congress in 2022 as the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA). Now, in cases of sexual assault, domestic violence, murder, and other serious defenses, the key decision-making authorities will be specialized, independent military prosecutors rather than chain of command.

JWI CEO Meredith Jacobs said in a statement:

“This Executive Order is the most significant reform of the military justice system since it was established in 1950. Previously, survivors’ only recourse was their chain of command—a complicated path that too easily discouraged reporting. This trauma-informed, survivor-centered solution creates an independent recourse for disclosure and justice. We applaud President Biden, the Administration, and the members of Congress and advocates, who worked tirelessly for years to bring about this reform. JWI is proud to be among those who championed this work.

“And, as always, we are grateful to the men and women who serve in our armed forces and who sacrifice so much in service to our great nation. We do not take lightly what it means to serve and what it means to support family members who serve.”
