Impact of Domestic Violence on Victims

Victims of domestic abuse may experience reactions, both immediate and long-term, that extend beyond the physical evidence of violence. The following signs may indicate an abusive relationship, though they could also result from a variety of stressful situations:

  • chronic headaches and/or stomachaches
  • changes in eating patterns
  • difficulty becoming pregnant
  • panic attacks
  • other long-term or permanent physical health problems
  • emotional withdrawal
  • impulsivity or aggressiveness
  • increased violent tendencies
  • apprehension or fear
  • nervousness or anxiety
  • hyper-vigilance
  • changes in sleeping patterns
  • decreased productivity at work
  • inability to concentrate
  • decreased desire to engage in community or other social activities
  • depression
  • substance abuse
  • suicidal thoughts or attempted suicide
  • Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder

If you or someone you know is experiencing any of these symptoms, seek help: a medical doctor and/or a trained counselor can help develop essential coping strategies to overcome the traumatic effects of abuse.
