Each year, the Women to Woman gala event begins with the Up Close & Personal Symposium, a panel discussion with the honorees. For many annual attendees, this is the part that’s not to be missed: The symposium offers a time for the honorees to interact with each other and to share their thoughts and feelings with the audience about issues that, as Jewish women, we all care deeply about. This year, we are delighted to have Jane Eisner, editor of the Forward and host of The Salon on The Jewish Channel, moderate the symposium.
Eisner, Forward editor since June 2008, is the first woman to hold the position. Under her leadership, the Forward has won numerous regional and national awards for its original print and online journalism.
Before joining the Forward, Eisner held executive editorial and news positions at the Philadelphia Inquirer for 25 years. She has also written for the Washington Post, Newsday, Brookings Review, Columbia Journalism Review, Ma’ayan and the Reconstructionist, and served as a regular panelist on the WPVI television talk show Inside Story. Her book, Taking Back the Vote: Getting American Youth Involved in our Democracy, was published by Beacon Press in 2004.
In addition to journalism, Eisner has deep roots in academe, and has taught journalism, non-fiction writing, and political science. She is an active member of her local community, and holds positions on many local and national boards.
The Up Close & Personal Symposium is followed by a gala luncheon and awards ceremony, during which each of the honorees will deliver an inspiring ‘Pearl of Wisdom.’
